Course Introduction

MODULE 1 – FORENSIC ENTOMOLOGY

This module covers an introduction to forensic entomology, its historical evolution, career prospects, and the scope of working as a forensic entomologist. The classification of forensic entomologists is discussed, highlighting the varied role they play during legal investigations. The use of taxonomic keys is highlighted as an insect identification tool; the significance of forensic entomology in estimating time since death and the limitations of this field are also taught.

MODULE 2 – INTRODUCTION TO INSECTS

In this module, you will gain insights about insects, their physiological and anatomical aspects, the intricate structure of their cuticle, their life cycle, the concept of metamorphosis, and the factors that affect insect growth. The module also covers a deep understanding of the role and significance of insects within forensic contexts and how studying their life stages and colonization patterns on cadavers acts as a crucial tool for estimating postmortem intervals.

MODULE 3 – INSECTS OF FORENSIC IMPORTANCE I

This module explores different types of fly families significant in forensic entomology. It covers blowflies (Calliphoridae), houseflies (Muscidae), fleshflies (Sarcophagidae), skipperflies (Piophilidae), and mothflies and sandflies (Psychodidae). For each type, you will be taught their diversity, life cycle, common species, colonization patterns around corpses, and how they assist in forensic investigations.

MODULE 4 – ROLE OF ENTOMOLOGY IN HUMAN DECOMPOSITION

This module covers the study of decomposition stages in forensic entomology, its historical context, stages of decomposition (fresh, bloated, decay, post-decay, and dry), and factors affecting decomposition, including physical factors, chemical influences, climatic conditions, and the involvement of animals. The study of these elements leads to a deep understanding of the relationship between the environment and body decomposition within a forensic context.

MODULE 5– ENTOMOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION AND EVIDENCE COLLECTION

This module explores the techniques used for collecting entomological evidence, preserving and storing such evidence, the significance of maintaining its integrity, and determining the elapsed time since death using two key methodologies: one by successional waves of insects and the other by assessing maggot age and development.

MODULE 6 – WATER, DRUGS, TOXINS, AND INSECT DECOMPOSITION

This module focuses on the impact of chemicals on arthropod biology, specifically in relation to insect development and decomposition, the effects of recreational chemicals, considerations in aquatic environments, the diverse range of poisons, and the implications of insecticides. This module will equip you with knowledge about the interactions between chemicals and arthropod life cycles in forensic and environmental contexts.

MODULE 7 – ARTHROPOD BORNE DISEASE AND ITS INFESTATION

This module covers the field of arthropod-borne diseases, beginning with an introduction to the various diseases transmitted by arthropods. The phenomenon of delusory parasitosis, highlighting the details of mite infestations and other related issues, is also covered. The role of public health policies and litigation of arthropod-borne diseases is discussed, focusing on their effects on both individuals and public health systems. Finally, you will learn about the significance of forensic entomology and its role in handling arthropod-related health challenges.

The module concludes with the utilization of entomological evidence within the framework of administrative law, highlighting the valuable role it plays in forensic investigations.
